Virginia Smith Sides, 98, resident of The Presbyterian Home of Clinton, SC passed away Monday April 24, 2023 at The Presbyterian Home.
Born in Fairview, NC she was a daughter of the late Daniel Alexander Smith and Ruby Ellen Brooks Smith.
Virginia Sides lived a full and varied life: at six feet tall, she was a standout women’s basketball player in high school, and played semi-professional ball for a short period of time after graduation. She was a runner up to Miss Monroe (NC) in the early 1940s.
During World War II, she worked in Civil Service in Daytona Beach, FL and Bridgeport, CT, where she was a gauge inspector for B-17 and B-29 bombers.
After raising her children, she worked at Limestone College (Gaffney, SC), the Gaffney Public Library, and as Children’s Librarian at Greenwood Public Library. She was a loyal and active member of Abbeville Presbyterian Church during her and Rev. Sides stay here.
Survivors include: two sons Charles Hobart (Bart) Sides (Nancy) of Westminster, MA and Daniel (Danny) Howard Sides (Amanda) of Taylors; grandchildren Adoniram Bartlett Sides of Warwick, RI, Hannah Ellington Sides Kazimir of New York City, Jennifer Sides of Myrtle Beach, SC and Jonathan Sides of Taylors; three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday April 28, 2023 at 2:00 PM in Long Cane Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Todd officiating.
The family will receive friends at the graveside.
