Rufus Henry Ayers, 82, formerly of 1217 Rock Hill Road, currently of The Maples, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Lowndesville, he was a retired postal employee and a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He also received the Purple Heart. He was a Mason and a member of The Clinton Lodge No. 3 AFM. He was a member of the Edgewood Community Club and a founding member of the Edgewood Fire Dept., a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Men's Sunday school class.
Surviving are daughters, Mary Anne Rice of Belton and Ruthie Edmunds of Abbeville; son, David Ayers of Easley; and seven grandchildren.
He was the son of the late Thomas Underwood and Eunice Clark Ayers.
Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bob Clemons; entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
The family is at the home of his daughter Mr. and Mrs. Barry Edmunds, 956 Rock Hill Road, Abbeville.
