Rita Mary Hawco Rooney

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Aunt Mrs. Rita Mary (Hawco) Rooney, 99, on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at the Abbeville Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Harbor Main, Newfoundland on October 21, 1905 and the daughter of the late Patrick Joseph and Anna (Sullivan) Hawco.

Mrs. Rooney immigrated to the U.S.A. at an early age. She met her husband John (Jack) Rooney, and was married August 25, 1935 and resided in Brooklyn, NY. She became a United States citizen on August 25, 1941.

After retirement the family moved to South Carolina.

Mrs. Rooney was a devout Catholic and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Rooney and her son, Robert Rooney. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Davis and two brothers, Leo and Vincent Hawco.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and also by a very special friend and caregiver, Cheryl Watson.

A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted Friday, December 31, 2004 at 10:00AM from The Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Allam Marreddy conducting rites. The Mass of Christian burial will follow in Cedar Springs A.R.P. Church Cemetery.

The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home, Abbeville, SC.
