Richard Newell, 83, of 302 McGowan Ave. died Friday, April 2, 2004, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, he was the son of the late Andrew Baskin and Louise Milford Newell.
He was a graduate of Abbeville High School. He was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was the former owner and operator of Newell's Auto Sales. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was a lifetime member of Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church where he served as secretary/treasurer of the Sunday School Class for 27 years.
Surviving are widow, Beatrice Lewis Newell of the home; sons, Rick Newell and Steve Newell, both of Abbeville; two grandsons; brothers, Westfield Newell of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Raymond Newell, Adolphus Newell, Jack Newell and Mortimer Newell, all of Abbeville; and sisters, Thelma N. Suber, Doris N. Richey and Polly N. Smith, all of Abbeville.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Joe M. Newell.
Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Jeffery Lang and Roy Beckman; burial will be in Long Cane Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home. The family is at the home.
