Rachel Hood

Rachel Grier Hood, 96, resident of Columbia Presbyterian Community, formally of Due West, entered into rest Wednesday March 13, 2024, at her residence.

Born on March 20, 1927 in Clover, SC to the late Rev. William Pressly and Nellie Brownlee Bigham Grier, she was a homemaker and later retired from Greenville Technical College where she taught Math in the Continuing Education Department for 20 years.

Throughout her life she was a strong supporter of Erskine College, from where she graduated in 1948, and while living at the Due West Retirement Center for 22 years, she often volunteered at the college. She very much enjoyed those years, having so many nieces and nephews, as well as other family close by. Rachel was also very active in Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Greenville while she lived in Greenville, as well as the Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Due West. Rachel enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, traveling, and joining in on activities with her friends and family. For many years the Grier families vacationed together at the Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, NC. Wonderful memories!

Surviving are her 3 daughters, Barbara Grier Hood Moran (Bruce), Catherine Hood Dolan (Neal), and Rachel Elizabeth Hood Edwards (Ben); her grandchildren, Christopher W. Moran (Katie), Rachel Marie Dolan (Alex), Rachel Jeanette McCoy, Erin Grier Moran Tokey (Jason), Angela Catherine Edwards, Brendan Francis Dolan, Benjamin Elijah Edwards V; 6 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William McLeod Hood, brothers, Rev. Dr. William Pressly Grier, Jr., Paul Livingston Grier, and Dr. John Miller Grier, a sister, Nellie Grier Sewall.

A Memorial service will be conducted Monday March 25, 2024 at 1:00 PM from the Due West ARP Church, with Rev. Calvin Draffin officiating. The family will receive friends following the services in the Fellowship Hall.

The family wishes to express their heart felt appreciation to the staff of Columbia Presbyterian Community for their skilled and compassionate care of Ms. Hood for the past 10 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the PCSC Foundation, 2817 Ashland Rd. Columbia, SC 29210 or to the Bonclarken Conference Center, 500 Pine Dr. Flat Rock, NC 28731.
