Mary Emma Hawthorne Bowie, 94, resident of 2 Kennedy St Due West passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Abbeville Area Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1921 in the Arborville Community of Abbeville County SC, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Ethel Jane "Polly" Nickles Hawthorne and the widow of Calvin Newell Bowie.
Mary Emma was a faithful member of Gilgal UMC and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Her love of gardening was a beauty to all those in the community and beyond.
Survivors include her children Calvin Newell Bowie, Jr. (Clementine) of Selma, AL, Robert "Bob" Lee Bowie (Lynn) of Edgefield, SC, Bonnie Marie Bowie Lowery of Due West, SC, and Edward Sharpe Bowie (Christine) of Aiken, SC; a sister Dora Hawthorne Hewitt of Florence, SC; 9 grandchildren Caroline Seale Acosta (Jason), Calvin Newell "Tripp" Bowie, III, Hunter Lee Bowie, Clinton Sharpe Bowie, Theodore Carroll Bowie (Morgan), Bonnie Kara Lowery, Jennifer Shaye Lowery, Emma Angelina Bowie and Andrew Edward Bowie; 6 great-grandchildren Zachary Charles Acosta, Bradley Ryan Acosta, Carter Thomas Bowie, Raley Hawthorne Bowie, Banks Lawson Bowie and Bennett Lee Bowie; and a beloved friend Minnie Lee Pruitt who helped care for Mary Emma for many years.
In addition to her husband, her siblings Lois H. Hatch, William Hawthorne, Carroll Hawthorne and Agnes H. Latimer preceded Mary Emma in death.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 1, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Gilgal UMC with burial immediately following in Gilgal Cemetery. The family will receive friends after services.
