Mary Lee Smith Allen, 87, resident of 324 Old Douglas Mill Road, Abbeville, widow of Frank Edward Allen went to be with her Lord on Thursday Nov. 15, 2018 at the Hospice House in Greenwood, SC with her loving family by her side.
Mary was born Dec. 10, 1930 in Union, SC a daughter of the late Wylie Drayton Smith and Lois Victoria West Smith.
Mary was a retired Sales Clerk with Belk Department Store and Myers Arnold where she was named numerous times as the top sales person. She was very active in her community as she was a former Troop Leader of the Girl Scouts of America and Den Mother for the Cub Scout Troop all sponsored by Main Street United Methodist Church. Mary was very active in the mother’s March of Dimes and the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital where she helped raise numerous funds through the years. She also helped with a Christmas party for the Mental Health Association and was active in raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Mary was a faithful member of Main Street UMC for over 56 years. She served her church in many ways as a member of the church Choir for over 40 years, a member of the Susanna Wesley Circle of the church where she was former president and she also taught Children’s Sunday School Class. Mary loved gardening, as her yard showed where she grew lovely Gladiolus and made arrangements to take to shut-ins. She also enjoyed sewing and painting. Mary could not read music, but she played the organ by ear beautifully. She was a free-spirited person and just loved helping and serving others.
Survivors include: her son Mike Allen of the home; a daughter Angela Stokes (Ken) of Evans, Georgia; a brother William Smith of Union, SC and a sister Alien Smith of Union, SC; five grandsons Stephen Allen, Jeff Allen, Mark Allen, Eric Stokes and Brian Stokes.
She was preceded in death by a son Ted Allen and three sisters Clara Wright, Juanita Scruggs and Lillie Mae Scruggs and a brother Jimmy Ray Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brian Arant officiating. The burial will follow in Oakbrook Memorial Park in Greenwood, SC.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Sunday afternoon in the Greene Center at Main Street UMC prior to services.
