Ret. Lt. Col. Julian Ray Hines, 72, of 1533 S.C. 201 died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Columbus, N.C., he was a retired lieutenant colonel, beginning his military career in 1947 and retiring from active duty in 1969. He served 10 years in the U.S. Marines and 12 years in the U.S. Army. He received The China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with 2 Stars, National Defense Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea). He was formerly associated with the Abbeville County Development Board. He was also a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.
Surviving are widow, Barbara Hawthorne Hines of the home; daughter, Mary Nell Hines of Inman; sons, Robert Allan Hines, David Thomas Hines, James Steven Hines, John Michael Hines and Jerry Richard Hines, all of Pauline, Steven Claude Hines of Reidsville, Philip Raymond Hines of Otisfield, Maine; stepson, Douglas Littlefield of Anderson; brother, Carl Lee Hines of Pauline; sisters, Katherine H. Zittauer of Kingwood, Texas, and Esther H. Terry of Rushton, La.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was the son of the late Ellis Cannon and Jennie Jones Hines. He was first married to the late Betty Sanders Hines. He was preceded in death by a son William Rivers Hines.
Graveside services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Long Cane Cemetery with Full Military Rites. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Chander-Jackson Funeral Home.
