Joyce Land Smith

Gwendolyn Joyce Land Smith, 81, formerly of Roxanna Drive Ninety Six, SC widow of Doyle L. Smith passed away peacefully Wednesday August 21, 2013 at Abbeville Nursing Home with her loving family by her side.

Born Feb. 19, 1932 in Greenwood, SC she was a daughter of the late Samuel Edward Land and Bertie Fisher Land.

Joyce was a former executive secretary with Parke-Davis Company and also worked for Greenwood Mills before becoming the owner and operator of Nelly Murray Florist in Greenwood, SC from which she retired. She was a life long member of Temple Baptist Church in Ninety Six, SC were she served as a Sunday school teacher as well as various capacities within the church. The love and joy of her life were the 28 wonderful years she spent with her late husband Doyle L. Smith. She was "the best mom in the world" as described by her son Mark whom she devoted her life to raising and caring for. In her eyes Mark could do no wrong. He only took a back seat to the apples of her eye her grandchildren Tuck and Tootie whom she loved dearly. She will be remembered for her loving and caring demeanor and will be missed by her loving family and her many friends.

Survivors include a son Mark Linwood Smith and his wife Cherri of Abbeville, SC and her two grandchildren Tucker and EmilyAnna Smith; a sister-in-law Marian "Bill" Land of Ninety Six, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter Emily Faye Smith and two sisters Hazel Land Brabham and Mattie Inez Rivers (Coley) and two brothers Emanuel Land (Valeen), J.W. "Skeeter" Land and a special nephew R. Lanny Brabham (Madeline).

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday Aug. 24, 2013 at 3:00 PM in Temple Baptist Church in Ninety Six with the Revs. Johnny McDaniel and Tommy Cartledge officiating. The burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home of her son Mr. & Mrs. Mark Smith 319 Wilewood Rd. Abbeville, SC.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1:30 until 3:00 PM in the Social Hall at Temple Baptist Church prior to services.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Boswell, Troy Wilson, Eddie Martin, Sam Holden, Melvin Griffin, Paul Cobb, Norman Cockrell and Eric Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Holden, Jr., Bryan Hope, Lee Keels, Pat Koone, Jim Manley, Richard Wilson, Greg Spearman and Jeff Cockrell.

The Smith family would like to send a SPECIAL THANK YOU to the staff, nurses and administrators of the Abbeville Nursing Home for the dedicated and loving care they gave Mrs. Smith in her final days.
