Joe Buddy Creswell, 82, resident of 4228 Hwy. 201 husband of Vivian Pruitt Creswell died Thursday Oct. 4, 2007 at his home.
Born in Abbeville Co. SC he was a son of the late Joseph M. and Janie Martin Creswell.
Joe Buddy attended Abbeville Co. Schools and was a U.S. Marine veteran having served in the Marshall Islands. After working in Abbeville Mills for a number of years Joe Buddy began his long career in law enforcement in 1951 a career that spanned over 35 years. Joe Buddy started as a patrolman with the Abbeville City Police Dept. and worked his way through the ranks and was named City Chief of Police in 1975. Joe Buddy retired from law enforcement in 1987. His law enforcement education included police schools such as FBI Special Training, FBI Finger-Printing, SC Traffic Accident Training Investigation, SC Detective Investigation and SC Homicide and Rape Training, Counterfeiting and Forgery, SC Narcotics Training and SC Criminal Records. He also served in SC Attorney General Leadership Training level 1 and 2 , and served for four years as a group leader in training law enforcement officers.
Joe Buddy was also and active member of his community as he was a mason and member of the Clinton Lodge# 3 AFM and a shriner and a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple.He was also a member of the American Legion Post #2 and the VFW. He also served on the Foster Care Board and was an active member of Southside Baptist Church. Joe Buddy will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by his family and many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Pruitt Creswell of the home; 2 sons, Barry Creswell and his wife Cheryl of Abbeville, SC and Steve Creswell and his wife Erna of Aiken, SC; 2 daughters, Vickie Roller and her husband Ronnie of Abbeville, SC and Renee' Creswell of Atlanta, GA; 1 step-daughter Gwen Prince and her husband Robbie of Ninety Six, SC; 1 step-son Kent Culbreth and his wife Joyce of Level Land, SC; He was twice married first to Quida Adams Creswell; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was the last member of his immediate family.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday Oct 6, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Hartley and Sheriff Charles Goodwin officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:00 PM. The burial will follow in Melrose Cemetery with military honors.
