Longtime Abbeville resident John "Peter" Trenholm, age 79, died Thursday, August 28, 2008 in the home he shared on Millwood Road with his wife of 53 years, Julianne Dye Trenholm. Peter was born March 15, 1929 in Lexington, Massachusetts, the son of the late John Davis and Bertha Moynihan Trenholm.
Peter earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Yale University and had a long career in banking and investments. The past 30 years he operated the firm Peter Trenholm Inc. Investment Counsel. In addition to a monthly economic commentary, "Trends", Peter wrote the columns "Money Matters" and "Steeple Chasing" in The Abbeville Press and Banner. Peter enjoyed his reputation as a dexterous and perspicacious wordsmith.
Peter was very active in Church and civic organizations. Boards served on included: Greenwood-Lander Performing Arts, Abbeville Hospital Foundation Board, and Bank of Abbeville which Peter co-founded. A strong supporter of the arts, Peter served as a financial advisor, stage manager and actor for the Abbeville Opera House. When in good health, one of Peter's favorite activities was delivering Meals On Wheels.
A devout Episcopalian, Peter served a variety of positions at Trinity Episcopal Church and for the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina. Most recently Peter was Board Chairman of The Bishop Gravatt Center. Of particular pride to Peter was his induction to The Fellowship of St. John.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Julie of the home and 3 children: Shaun and wife Cheryl of Lawrence, Kansas and children Michael and Andrew Blackford and Ashley and Whitley Jackson; Dirk of St. Maries, Idaho; and Sheila and husband Tim Schaffer and children Drew and Reid of Norwalk, Ohio; and brother David and wife Virginia of East Granby, Connecticut and niece Emily of Memphis.
Upper South Carolina Bishop Dorsey Henderson, assisted by Reverend Rilla Holmes, will celebrate a Funeral Eucharist for Peter at Trinity Episcopal Church, Abbeville on Tuesday, September 2 at 4pm. The family will have a visitation Monday, September 1 from 4-6pm at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home in Abbeville. Interment will follow ib Long Cane Cemetery.
