James Elgin Hawthorne

James "Elgin" Hawthorne, Sr., 83, resident of 69 Hwy. 20 husband of Emily Shands Hawthorne went to be with his Lord Saturday April 11, 2014.

Born in Abbeville, SC he was a son of the late Robert Leon Hawthorne, Sr and Bertha Elgin Hawthorne.

Elgin was a retired retail salesman. Elgin had a deep religious conviction as he dearly loved his family, his Lord and his church. He was a devoted member of Abbeville First Baptist Church where he and wife Emily were very active in missions work within the church. He was a former deacon and superintendent of Education as well as a member of the Berea Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years Emily Shands Hawthorne of the home; two sons James E. Hawthorne, Jr. (Lisa) of Greenwood, SC and Leland Hawthorne (Grace) of Central, SC; one brother Robert L. Hawthorne, Jr. of Abbeville, SC; one sister Annie Mae Clark of Greenville, SC; three grandchildren James E. Hawthorne, III (Jodie) of Anderson, SC, Rev. Samuel L. Hawthorne of Greenwood, SC and Elizabeth Hawthorne of Central, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM in Abbeville First Baptist Church with Dr. John Keith and Rev. Samuel Hawthorne officiating. The burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 PM at the Funeral Home.
