Fred Allen Bowie, 85, resident of 99 Hwy. 185 Donalds, SC, husband of Margaret Baldwin Bowie passed away peacefully Friday Oct. 30, 2015 at National Healthcare in Laurens, SC.
Born in Abbeville, SC he was a son of the late Thomas A. Bowie and Emma Hawthorne Bowie.
Fred worked on the family farm and at the sawmill before leaving to serve his country during the Korean War. Upon returning home with his young family, Fred worked as a mechanic and eventually retired from Kennedy's Exxon in Due West, SC. Fred was the oldest living member of Gilgal United Methodist Church prior to his death. Fred had a special love for his church where he enjoyed serving the community. Fred was also an avid fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and matching wits with the local chipmunks.
He is survived by: His loving wife of 64 years Margaret Baldwin Bowie of the home; a son Harold Bowie (Sue) of Waterloo, SC; Fred was proud of his four grandchildren Sarah Catto (Nick) of Charleston, SC, Chad Bowie (Allie) of Charleston, SC, Ben Bowie (Heather) of Columbia, SC and Emily Bowie of Durham, NC; He found delight in his two great-grandchildren Nicholas Catto and Cheston Bowie.
He was preceded in death by two brothers J.C. and Lawrence Bowie.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday Nov. 3, 2015 at 2:00 PM in Gilgal United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Hammett officiating. The burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home of his son Mr. & Mrs. Harold Bowie 122 Lick Creek Circle Waterloo, SC.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 until 2:00 PM in the social hall at Gilgal United Methodist Church prior to services.
In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Fred may be made to Gilgal United Methodist Church Gilgal Church Rd. Abbeville, SC 29620.
