Eugene Wilkes Smith

Eugene Wilkes Smith, 75, of 603 Chestnut St. died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood.

Born in Abbeville County, he was a graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Presbyterian College. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired insurance salesman with Colonial Life. He was a member of the Abbeville Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are brother, William Joel Smith Jr. of North Augusta, and a sister, Emma Jean Stranch of Kingsport, Tenn.

He was the widower of June Gray Smith and was the son of the late William Joel Sr. and Kathline Elizabeth Wilkes Smith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Augustus Marshall Smith Jr.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Long Cane Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the services.

The family will be at the home of Mrs. Charlotte Smith, 108 Florence St., Abbeville.

The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Human Society in Greenwood.
