Ethel Laughter Hughes Carpenter

March 16, 1933 — January 5, 2010

Ethel Laughter Hughes Carpenter, 76, resident of # 2 Royal Oak Drive formerly of Abbeville, SC wife of John Carpenter passed peacefully at her home Tuesday Jan. 5, 2010.

She was born in Rutherford Co. NC to the late Angus Laughter and Ruth Early Laughter.

She was a graduate of Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing. She was also a member of the Lutheran Church at the Lake. Ethel was also the Founder and President of the Abbeville Nursing Home for many years. She was a lifetime member of the South Carolina Healthcare Association and a Board Member of the SC Long Term Care Administrators Licensure Board. She was former President of the High Meadows Country Club and former President of the Women's Golf Association at Greenwood Country Club. Ethel was named as a member of the 2000 Notable Women and was voted Who's Who of American Women & Finance and Industry.

She is survived by: 2 sons Steven P. Hughes of Valdese, NC and Alan L. Hughes and his wife Sharon of Abbeville, SC; 2 step-daughters Catherine C. Carpenter and Elizabeth C. Wicklund; 1 brother Michael L. Laughter of Surfside Beach, SC; 1 sister Linda L. Dowdy of Raleigh, NC; 1 granddaughter Kristen A. Hughes and 2 step-grandsons Dustin A. New (Dusty) and Douglas A. New (Doug).

A Memorial Celebration of Life will be conducted Saturday Jan. 9, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Grace United Methodist Church in Abbeville, SC with the Rev. Dr. Randall Ruble officiating. The burial will be at a later date. The family is at the home # 2 Royal Oak Drive Greenwood, SC.

Memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Carpenter to the Faith Home of Abbeville 309 Washington St. Abbeville, SC 29620.
