Carl Hitch Davis

April 10, 1926 — October 11, 2004

Carl H. Davis, 78, resident of 1307 N. Main St., husband of Grace Link Davis died Monday, October 11, 2004 at Abbeville Co. Memorial Hospital.

Born in Abbeville, SC, he was the son of the late William McKnight and Jettie Ashley Davis.

His career in textiles covered a span of 39 years. Thirteen of those years with Milliken Textiles in Abbeville, SC, beginning as industrial engineer. He was promoted to shift supervisor when he was 22 years old, the youngest age of a shift supervisor in the history of the company. In 1946 he transferred to Milliken Mills in Laurens, SC as superintendent of Yarn Mill and technical superintendent of the plant. His textile venture took him to Bath Mills, Bath, SC as superintendent of Yarn Mill. After 3 years he moved to Roxsboro, NC and worked for Somerset-Hill Mills, Inc. Ten years later the company was sold and he took a position with Pharr Yarns Mills, Inc. McAdenville, NC. He held several different titles while there, plant manager of Imperial Mills, Belmont, NC, plant manager of unit 24 Mills and director of Apparel and Upholstery, McAdenville, NC.

He was a lifetime member of the Clinton Lodge #3AFM and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an active member of civic organizations in towns which he lived. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Abbeville, SC and president of the Baracus Sunday School Class. He served as deacon at Southside Baptist Church, Abbeville, SC, Roxsboro Baptist Church, Roxsboro, NC and McAdenville Baptist Church, McAdenville, NC.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years; 2 brothers, Jasper Davis and his wife, Katie of Abbeville, SC and Paul Davis and his wife, Janice of Abbeville, SC; sisters, Margaret Maddox of Greenwood, SC, Janice Bouknight and her husband, Robert (Bobby) of Tifton, GA; sister-in-law, Eleanor Davis of Abbeville, SC.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Lee Davis and Andrew Davis; a sister, Mary Pelfrey; and a sister-in-law, Grace E. Davis.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at 2:00PM from Abbeville First Baptist Church with the burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

The body is at the Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00PM Tuesday evening. The family is at the home, 1307 N. Main St.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Baracus Sunday School Class, Herbert Fleming, Henry McCord, Lowrie McNeill, Gus Latham and Dewey Goin.
