Bennett Graydon Campbell, Jr., 97, resident of Abbeville Nursing Home formerly of 600 N. Main St. widower of Esther Eugenia Simpson Campbell passed away peacefully Monday Aug. 15, 2016 at the nursing home.
Born in the Nation Community of Abbeville, SC, Oct. 21, 1918, he was a son of the late Bennett Graydon Campbell, Sr. and Essie Childs Campbell.
Bennett was retired from Seaboard Railroad after 30 years as an Engineer. He was one of the first Abbeville County Commissioners to serve at Piedmont Technical College. He was also a member of South Side Baptist Church. Bennett was one of the founding members of Edgewood Fire Dept. He managed the first egg farm in Abbeville County. A special love of his after retirement was working on his farm and tending to his cows. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grand children.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Irvin of Taylors, SC; three sons, Don Campbell (Patti), Ronny Campbell (Wanda) and Richard "Rick" Campbell (Ann) all of Abbeville, SC; a brother, Sonny Campbell of Spartanburg, SC; two sisters, Eva Ruth Griffin of Waldo, FL and Jackie Williams of Greenwood, SC; nine grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren. A special niece Pat Thomasson.
He was preceded in death by a grandson Jimmy Moore and one brother and five sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday Aug. 17, 2016 at 11:00 in the Chandler Chapel at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Hartley officiating. The burial will follow in Bells United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family is at the home of his son Mr. & Mrs. Don Campbell 1233 Hwy. 28 North Abbeville, SC.
The family will receive friends Wednesday morning from 10:00 until 10:45 AM in the funeral home prior to services.
