Frances Amelia Seawright Dobbins, 97, resident of 217 S. Main St. passed away Monday June 17, 2013 at Hospice of the Piedmont in Greenwood, SC
She was born Sept. 12, 1915 in Iva, SC a daughter of the late John Roseman Seawright and Maude Lee Burriss Seawright.
She graduated from Iva High School and was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1932. She received her R.N. Degree in Nurses Training at the Henry Grady Hospital School of Nursing. She received her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Valdosta State University in 1955; her Master of Education Degree in 1960 from the University of Florida. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Chi Honors Society. She served as a home care nurse, a dietician and Manger of Public School Lunchroom Programs in SC, and a public school classroom teacher in Florida and SC.
She was married to the late Thomas Louis Dobbins, Sr. in March of 1937 in the Manse of the Iva Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. R.M. Baird, then the minister of the church. She was a member of the Iva ARP Church, 1st becoming a member at the age of 8. She was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, The Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Colonial Dames 17th Century; all located in Anderson, SC. Her late husband, who died in 1996, was a long time public school administrator in SC, Georgia and Fla.
She was a descendent of the Pioneer Family of Seawright, of Donalds-Due West area of Abbeville, Co. and of The Pioneer family of Burris of the Anderson-Iva area of Anderson Co. She also studied on the Doctorate of Education Degree at George Peabody College for Teachers.
Survivors include 2 sons Thomas Louis Dobbins, Jr. of Edgefield, SC and John Dobbins of the home; 1 daughter Frances D. Allen of Bakersfield, CA.
She was preceded in death by 3 sisters Martha S. Parr, Eleanor S. Hall and Wilma S. Apple.
Funeral services will be conducted, Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Iva ARP Church with the Rev. Steve Hardy officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson, SC.
